The National Healthy Schools programme is a long term initiative that helps children and young people and their schools to be healthy. It is making a difference to the health and achievement of young people in thousands of schools ascross England.
The Healthy Schools programme aims to:
- support children & young people in developing healthy behaviour
- help to raise pupil achievement
- help reduce pupil inequalities
- promote social inclusion
The programme isn't just about physical health; it's about good health and happiness inside and out. And it's not just about pupils either; a Healthy School involves the whole school community - from parents to governors to school staff - in improving their health and getting the most out of life.
Children in Health Schools say they feel healthier, happier and safer. The Healthy Schools programme has brought schools sustained improvement in behaviour, standards of work and school management.

Healthy School News
Over the last year the school has worked hard to improve on the good foundation we already had. Here are a few things we have achieved:
- Healthy Food Week – an exciting week of food related activities including cookery, art and gardening.
- Physical Activity Week – Throughout the week pupils had the opportunity to try new sports including rock climbing, tag rugby, swimming, trampolining, lacrosse, cricket etc and the whole school attended an activity day at the River Park Leisure Centre.
- Review of School dinners & lunch boxes. Following feedback from parents & pupils we changed the system of ordering lunches and went to one sitting for all pupils.
- Gardening activity. Parents set up large planters behind class 2 for the children to grow fruit & vegetables in. The pupils helped with the planting and ate the produce. They also had an opportunity to sell some to parents.
- Governors, staff, parents & pupils reviewed and wrote new healthy school policies including a whole school food policy, Physical Activity policy, travel to school policy etc.
- With money raised by FoSS (Friends of Sparsholt School ) new exciting playground equipment was installed, as well as the all-weather running track.
- The PSHE curriculum was revamped. Our OFSTED report praised our school in this area (given outstanding) and this is a major strength of our school.
- We extended out of school activities including a sports club for the infants and cross country running for older pupils.
Parental support has been excellent and it would be fantastic if a few more parents could offer help on a regular basis with cookery or sports activities (If interested please contact Lynn Laver).
OFSTED recently graded us outstanding for “the extent to which learners adopt healthy lifestyles” The school will continue to ensure that our children have an excellent education that offers them every opportunity to learn how to become happy, healthy, responsible citizens who reach their full potential.
