Yrs 4, 5 & 6 at Winchester Cathedral Art Day

21st January 2019

Oak and Rowan Class enjoyed three creative workshops at the inspiring Art and Design experience at our magnificent Winchester Cathedral on Monday.
  1. The children worked with the talented cathedral stonemasons who took them on a trail around the cathedral to look at stone sculptures, before inviting them into their workshop to carve in stone. Using stone masons’ chisels and mallets the children learned how to carve a pattern onto limestone.

  2. The illumination workshop was based on the stunning gold-leaf illuminated handwritten Winchester Bible, the children worked with the Cathedral scribes to discover more about the art of illumination and created an illuminated letter of their own.

  3. In the Heraldry workshop, the children used the many examples of heraldry on the cathedral ledger (grave) stones to discover their hidden meanings, and created a coat of arms to represent themselves.
Our children were fantastic ambassadors for our school, and we were very pleased to receive an email from the Director of Education praising their behaviour and creativity.

Many thanks to parents and Rev’d Jax who accompanied us for the day and enhanced our creative learning experience
